Jeff's Challenge:
Stop Making Excuses and Get Something Done
By Jeff Packer
The smartest
real-estate agent I have ever known wasn’t really a real-estate
agent at all. He was my grandfather, and by profession he was a
farmer in rural Mississippi.
My grandfather couldn’t read nor could he write anything more than
his name, yet he made no excuses and went about acquiring hundreds
of acres of property during a time when very few people possessed
the resources to do so, let alone an African American farmer one
generation removed from slavery. The one quality that always stood
out about my grandfather was that he “never made excuses.” He got up
with the sun, did what he had to do, and went to bed without so much
as a comment about how hot it was in the field that day.
Among his favorite quotes was the sentiment, “I have never had a
headache in my life.” I took that to mean that nothing got to him.
Even with all of our modern conveniences we often forget that
someone always has it tougher than we do. We delay starting that
business, or developing a plan of action because … well the timing
just isn’t right, the economy is bad, or the car is in the shop. Oh
stop wining and grow up!
There is no reason why you shouldn’t be enjoying the greatest days
of your life right now. There is no reason why your business
shouldn’t be prospering right now. Do you want to know what your
problem is … YOU!’
Here is what I do that kicks me in the butt when I want to slack off
or hide behind a cloud of excuses – DO IT NOW! The ‘Do It Now’
school of thought has served me well and it will serve you just as
well. If my Grandfather did it, you can too.
CHALLENGE: Do something right now that moves you one inch closer to
your goal. Then pick a day next week when you do yet another thing
that moves you two inches closer to your goal. You will be amazed at
the results.
