Client Highlight
Linda Lewis
The Breast Chek Kit, Inc.

By Carlotta Roberts

Linda Lewis had several years of experience fitting custom lingerie products to women, including mastectomy patients. She knew that out of 240,518 women who will be diagnosed with cancer each year, 40,460 will die and that the numbers who die could be reduced through early detection. Yet only 35% of the estimated 48,136,091 women around the world actually conduct a monthly breast self-exam. Out of her conversations with women, she learned that the three major reasons women do not perform monthly breast self-examinations were:

  • They do not know how to perform a breast self-exam.
  • They do not know what to feel for.
  • They believe that their breasts are either too large or too small to be able to detect an abnormality.

Linda created the Breast Chek Kit, Inc. to promote early detection of breast cancer and to educate women on how to conduct an exam. The Breast Chek Kit provides women with a garment that makes it easy to perform a monthly breast self exam and to track any possible abnormalities with the included fabric marker. It is useful for women of all sizes. Currently, instructions are available in English, Spanish, and French. The product has patent pending status and is trademarked.

When she began working with the Edge Connection in March 2007, it was clear Linda had two major needs: 1) to expand product exposure and recognition, and 2) to access additional funding for her business. At present, Linda has achieved the following:

  • Received a product endorsement by a physician with a specialty in breast cancer surgery.
  • Was selected as a sponsor and featured speaker at “Speaking of Women’s Health”, a health event of the Wellstar Health System attended by approximately 2000 participants who were introduced to her product.
  • Won first prize and a monetary award in the Kennesaw State University 2007 Concept to Reality Business Plan Competition.
  • Is negotiating contracts with two government agencies, a community health care center, a managed healthcare company, and a global breast cancer organization.

Linda Lewis is a diligent worker with a focused approach to business growth. The Edge Connection expects Linda to continue her success with the Breast Chek Kit in the coming year.
